Payroll tax is biggest state tax

Today the Age publishes the following correction:

THE biggest state tax is actually payroll tax, with conveyancing stamp duty second (“Another pokies bonanza coming Baillieu's way”, The Age, 28/11). Land tax is third or fourth depending on how many gambling taxes are lumped together.

Gavin Putland, Melbourne.

The cited article incorrectly stated that “Pokies taxes are one of the biggest annual tax earners for the state government — the third biggest single tax source after stamp duty and land tax.” The true contribution from property taxes can be seen in the graph in this earlier post.
